Inconsistent enforcement bugs a recently ticketed local

I recently got a $50 ticket for parking along side the curb by the Cooper’s parking lot, across from the bakery.  I do know there is a sign there limiting parking time to 2 hours, but have never had a problem in the almost two years that I have worked at the Bargain Shop.

The reason I park there is to not take up the parking for Coopers and all those stores, and I don’t park out front of my work as that parking is nice to be left for the bakery and bargain shop.  I also don’t park in Cooper’s as I see the motorhomes cram in there and have had my car dented from one scrapping alongside it.  I like to park where I can keep an eye on my vehicle, unfortunately with this town growing there is more mischief that happens.

Long story short I got a ticket and will most likely have to pay it, I phoned City Hall and didn’t get much help, was told that if i had bought a paper ages ago…or heard the radio I would know of the “free” parking lots in town, which happen to be several blocks away from my work, and definitely out of my sight.  The tickets are also interesting as it was soaking wet on my windshield from rain, can’t even read the car make on it or anything and there is no contact number to contest the ticket.

What really is frustrating is that for a few weeks now we (several ladies at my work) having been phoning around to different places (health numbers, city hall, WCB, etc…) to try and get the smoking bylaw enforced.  People smoke out back in the alley behind us (where) we haul stock through our doors and the smell makes us head-achey and sick and I personally am allergic to it.  We have asked them to stop, but got met with resistance so I FINALLY found a tobacco control program, out of town, that will deal with it, but only when one of their bylaw enforcers pass through town.

Funny how we are supposed to obey the bylaw, but there is no one to enforce it, and it is one that has serious health concerns.  And now the city has people enforcing parking which hurts no one, doesn’t make sense to me!?

Thanks for taking the time to read my rant,

Jodie Graham

it was in the paper a couple months ago that they were going to start giving out tickets, which have never been enforced before. i agree it sucks as there is HARDLY any where in the downtown area that you can park and not have to worry about getting one.

I agree, that goes for bike helmet laws as well they should either ticket everyone or not at all, I don’t get it???

It’s frustrating that I was parking where I wouldn’t take away from other businesses and got penalized for it. The city told me they are not responsible to provide safe parking for workers (as I said i wanted to see my car from work). A warning ticket would have been nice to, I’ve never had a ticket in my life, now I have a $50, kinda defeats my working that day. It just sucks…I will pay it…but maybe things should be re-looked at.

just like I thought, just the locals must adhere to the laws, but the tourists can do whatever they want.
i was going to Malone’s last week during a weekday, and lo and behold, there was a motorhome
not only parked on a yellow line in front of the royal bank, but this thing was also blocking a crosswalk.
where the hell was the enforcement officer then, too busy giving the locals tickets I guess. like I said,
if you have plates other than from B.C. you are immune to the city’s laws. Guess money does talk, at
    least here in Revelstoke.

Joe that is not a fair comment to make at all. I’m sure that your facts in regards to the location of the vehicle was right but to ask “where was the enforcement officer?” is not fair at all. This enforcement consists of a lot of factors not withstanding the fact that its a big town for one person to cover. If the issue was so important, and obviously based on your comment it was, then why didn’t you simpy take down the plate and contact the City to have it ticketed?

To be honest, I’m sure the motorhome would have been long gone before anyone would have shown up to hand out a ticket. I have been seeing motorhomes parking all over first street and mackenzie…sticking WAY out, making cars have to enter the other lane…and they sit there long. Revelstoke isn’t that big…where are there tickets?

Now that these $50 tickets are being issued, perhaps someone will sit up and pay attention to the fact that – in our little town of what, about 7500? – we are being cited with the heaviest parking fines – I believe – in the nation! Big cities like Calgary ($40) and Vancouver ($35) who are notorious for having the highest parking fines are left in the dust by little ol’ Revelstoke. IMO, yet another over-reaction by City Hall.
Do we need to start yet another petition to get them to revisit – and do some research – into the fine amounts in other parts of Canada, or even around BC?

gary, i didn’t mean to offend the detachment, i have nothing but the highest regards for our rcmp, the only
reason why i even mentioned the motorhome, was jodie is the about the third local that i have heard about
getting tickets, but i still see tourists parking illegally, and it dosen’t seem that anything is being done about it.
that is the only reason why i even made a statement about this issue. and once again i apoligise if i
offended anyone that i shouldn’t have.

hey commuters! because of their small size, bicycles are way easier to find parking for – and they don’t smoke either.

I requested a bike stand on the corner by TB!S for staff and customers to be able to lock there bikes and was turned down…there’s a cement one in the ground, but you can’t lock to it! Great suggestion though…
