Teens invited to submit their own videos to City contest
Video-minded high school students are being invited to sign up by Friday, July 6, to put together a two-to-five-minute video on how they get around town for a contest sponsored by the municipal planning department.
There’re a couple of hefty cash prizes — $300 for the best video as determined by popular vote and $200 for best promotion of a video by social media as determined an expert pan. There are also $50 cash prizes for the runners-up in both categories.
“I am organizing a youth video contest that asks youth to put together a two-to-five-minute video on how they get around Revelstoke – whether that be by foot, bicycle, skateboard, scooter, et cetera,” says the department’s Jessica Stuart. “Youth can use GoPros, digital cameras, cellphones or whatever they have access to for filming — it doesn’t have to be anything fancy. I can also lend out some Flip Video cameras. Participants can work by themselves or in groups up to three people.”
Stuart, who is working with the department and UBC this summer doing research on youth-engagement strategies in planning using digital and social media, says high school students can sign up for the event by clicking ‘join’ on the Facebook event here by July 6th (this event also includes all of the contest details – check it out): https://www.facebook.com/events/316291501798928/.
“It’s a fun activity to do this summer and a great opportunity to produce something the Planning Department can reference as they begin implementing the Transportation Master Plan and the Parks and Rec Master Plan, which includes initiatives such as dedicated and shared bike lanes and a trail network map. There are also a number of cash prizes available for best video and best promotion of a video to sweeten the deal.
Stuart also invited people to join the Facebook group MyRevelstoke2030 to stay in the loop: https://www.facebook.com/groups/myrevelstoke2030/ and to add her as a friend on Facebook to communicate directly: https://www.facebook.com/jessica.p.stuart.
Anyone with questions — or those who neither have nor want Facebook accounts — can also email her directly at email@example.com.
Video submissions are due by 5:00pm on Friday, July 27. Winners will be selected and announced at a special youth night at the Village Idiot on Wednesday, August 8 – attendees will help choose best video so everyone is invited to attend.
